November Curlkit vs Curlbox!

What A Difference A Year Makes

One day late in November 2010 as I tackled taking down my last set of kinky twists I sat in my bedroom confused and distraught…well not quite distraught but instead wondering what in the world is to come of my hair. A little voice in my head said, “check YouTube”. I had no idea what I was looking for other than natural hair. A few hours later I made a trip to my local beauty supply and bought my 1st product for my natural hair, the Jamaican Mango and Lime Braid, Twist and Lock Gel. I was ready to get to work. Armed with a pair of scissors and my bathroom mirror I cut off what little bit of relaxed ends I had left from my 7 month or so braid styles. To my surprise I was able to twist my hair with no problems and it actually turned out pretty darn fly I thought. That was the beginning of my natural hair love affair.

This past year I have embraced my hair as I never have before in my 33 years of life! Let me tell you it is so refreshing, fun, and exciting. I would not trade my curly, kinky, coily tresses for any type of  relaxed down the back hair. The anticipation of seeing how my hair progresses in the coming years solidifies that going natural was the absolute correct path for me!

Private Is A Start…More On The TypeF Foolery

This video is private.
Sorry about that.
Yes this is the image that you will see if you head over to the TypeF YouTube channel and attempt to view some of the videos that were created by JoAnne Robertson in an attempt to educate those on the care of natural hair. Now I didn’t click on every single video that was viewable recently but I selected roughly 6 and every one had this message.
Below is the message that TypeF left to the YouTube viewers in response to the comments they had gotten.
I did find it refreshing that they responded promptly and have made the videos non viewable and may make an attempt to change BUT honestly it should have never gotten to this point! I am not sure who was a part of searching out talent and reviewing the material but clearly that was a step, a big step that was missed in the equation. I do hope that they take the positive criticism they received to heart and not let the negative, harsh things that I saw sway them from making a change. It is great to voice opinions when something is wrong but downright disrespect and taking it elsewhere generally is not the best way to get results. Hopefully in the future when I stumble upon the TypeF station I will see some familiar YouTubers dishing out helpful natural hair advice.

TypeF is for Foolery! Really Tyra Banks?

Tyra Banks has  launched a website called TypeF that is set to feature fashion and beauty, with that a host of YouTube videos have been posted in correlation with the website. When I think of Tyra Banks I think of fashion forward, trendy and legitimate. Well that is not the case, at least with the Natural Hair videos.  At first view my jaw dropped to the floor in amazement especially as I saw a natural hair woman comb her hair with a paddle brush. That amazement turned to laughing hysterically as I continued to view this library of crap. From the twisties video, which us natural’s equate to two strand twists to rolling natural hair it just got worse. Amazement, to laughing hysterically, to down right pissed is how quickly my mood changed. Thinking clearly this has to be a joke!!!! Unfortunately I don’t think it is. I do not understand how Tyra Banks could endorse this madness.

Folks it is not just the natural hair videos. The curly hair videos and makeup tips are horrendous as well. What makes this even more of an offense is that someone that is newly natural or thinking about becoming natural may stumble upon this garbage and really take it at face value since of course it is a “licensed” hair stylist. If any of these tips are followed some serious damage is going to be done.  There are no videos at all that display proper techniques, how to achieve healthy hair, and by golly leave in conditioner is NOT the only thing us naturals use. Again this goes back to research and the many other plausible people on YT that can be a big help in the natural hair community. There is a plethora of positive and helpful information out!

If you feel inclined please head over to the YouTube channel and comment about your disgust and why these videos should be removed, or recreated with correct information.

Cassidy over at Natural Selection has a great open letter that she has written to TypeF. Just click on the link to take a peek.

Deuces To Some Of Those Products!

I am just in awe at some of the fun talent that shows itself in the YouTube community! This video is evidence that sending a strong message doesn’t have to be serious, stiff or boring. Shout out to you awesome natural hair divas.
